TinkerSynth is a small synthesizer built around an Arduino for a physical interfaces course. I designed the schematic — Arduino, piezo speaker, LEDs and buttons — and wrote the firmware.
My colleagues designed and manufactured the enclosure from laser-cut MDF, and I assembled and programmed the finished device.
The interesting constraint was that everything had to be legible as an instrument: you should be able to pick it up and understand what the controls do without a manual. That turned out to be much harder than making it produce sound.
